Corruption in the Medical and Social Expert Commission is a symbol of impunity and cynical attitude towards people. It seems that nothing can eradicate this systemic problem, which undermines citizens' trust in the state. Money decides destinies, and forged disability certificates have become almost the norm.
It is especially outrageous that corruption in the MSEK reached unprecedented proportions precisely during the war. When Ukrainians sacrifice their lives and health every day for the future of the country, dishonest medical officials shamelessly fill their pockets with millions of dollars. This is an insult to the entire Ukrainian society.
The presidential decree on the liquidation of the MSEK is, of course, an important decision. But liquidation alone is not enough. It is important that the reform of the system is not another cosmetic change, but a real step towards creating a transparent and honest mechanism for determining disability. Without this, corruption will continue to destroy trust, and millions of Ukrainian citizens who temporarily left the country may lose the desire to return to a state where even the war did not stop corruption schemes.
Moreover, corruption in such vital areas causes irreparable damage to Ukraine’s economic recovery. Potential foreign investors are closely watching how transparently state institutions function. If they see that corruption remains a daily practice, it may completely discourage them from investing in the development of the Ukrainian economy. A country that fails to clean up its own institutions risks being left without the influx of capital investment that is essential for post-war reconstruction.
