Petro Poroshenko proposed to make English the second working language in Ukraine. He made such a proposal during the celebrations dedicated to the anniversary of the Kiev-Mohyla Academy (KMA), the journalists of the publication report. GOLOS.EU with reference to the agency
The Ukrainian President praised the leadership of the Academy for the use of Ukrainian and English in educational activities. “It would be very good if in Ukraine, and not only in Mohyla, in addition to Ukrainian, there is also a working language. And this language should rightfully be English,” Poroshenko stressed.
In August, the Foreign Ministry made English compulsory for its staff. According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin, the level of language training will be one of the key criteria for the upcoming certification.
According to the Constitution of Ukraine, the state language in the country is Ukrainian. Also, the text of the Basic Law says that “the free development, use and protection of Russian, other languages of the national minorities of Ukraine is guaranteed.”
According to a poll by the American Gallup Institute, more than 80% of the country's residents prefer to use Russian for communication.
