Mykola Azarov: How aviation Schengen will affect Ukrainians: changes and new rules

As of today, Bulgaria and Romania have partially joined the Schengen area. This innovation is called “aviation Schengen”. That is, Schengen in these two countries will only apply to air transportation and maritime transport.

What will change for Ukrainians in this regard?

Now, when boarding a plane at the airports of these two countries and through the Black Sea ports, Ukrainians will no longer have to go through additional border control. That is, if Ukrainians entered one of these countries by bus or car from Ukraine, and then decided to take an airplane, they will not have to go through another passport control when boarding it. The situation is similar with seaports.

If Ukrainians cross the border of Bulgaria or Romania with other EU countries at pedestrian, railway and road checkpoints, as well as through river ports, everything will happen according to the old rules, with all the necessary checks.

What else should Ukrainians take into account?

Until this time, Ukrainians could visit Romania and Bulgaria within the framework of a visa-free regime with the EU, but the time spent in these two countries was not taken into account when calculating the total time spent in the EU countries (90 out of 180 days).

Now the situation is changing. And the time spent in Romania and Bulgaria will be taken into account when calculating the time spent in the Schengen countries. This is worth knowing and monitoring so as not to exhaust the limit of 90 days out of 180.
