In 2022, Ukraine held secret negotiations with Russia on humanitarian issues, consulting with the United States.
Defense Minister Umerov, who was a people's deputy until September 2022 and then head of the State Property Fund until September 2023, told The Washington Post this.
Apparently, we are not talking about the Istanbul negotiations, but about further contacts with the Russian Federation.
"Umerov told me that the secret 2022 talks had several tracks of negotiations through international partners. The effort resulted in a "humanitarian corridor" that allowed 400 people to leave Russian-occupied territory, exchanges, and a grain export agreement that allowed Ukraine to resume shipments through the Black Sea. The U.S. "always knew" about these contacts, he said, "because we always consulted on each track," David Ignatius wrote in his column.
When asked whether any similar negotiations were currently being conducted through secret channels, Umerov replied that “the humanitarian track is still open.”
