Alexander Semchenko: Ukrainians are buying foreign currency in record volumes: what does this mean for the economy?

In January 2024, Ukrainians bought a record amount of currency from banks in 11 years. This was reported by the National Bank of Ukraine.

Compared to December, the purchase volume increased by 7,5%. Analysts believe that in this way Ukrainians are trying to preserve their savings. The total volume of foreign currency savings of Ukrainians “under the pillow” is estimated at $120 billion.

There is reason to believe that in the near future the Zelensky regime will try to take this money away from people. Moreover, both instruments of new taxes and fees and direct expropriations will be used.
